My Ultra-Paranoid Backup Strategy

I am super-paranoid about losing data. I have ben using digital cameras since 1999. My oldest Daughter was one at the time.

This is the first digital camera picture I took of Megan.
There does not appear to be EXIF data on the picture, but I know it was an HP PhotoSmart camera.

Over the years, I’ve done a lot of things to protect these important files. I’ve burned then to CD and DVD, I’ve copied them to external drives and thumb drives. I’ve backed them up to Mozy (back when they actually had a reasonably-priced unlimited plan), then Carbonite (until I hit their cap where while they don’t tell you you cannot upload anything else, they slow down the upload to basically enforce a limit).

Our first example actually contains 2 typos in one sentence:

See if you can spot them both. I’ll give you a hint. It is apparent that whatever Rene uses to author content does not have a spell-checker.

Next we have ‘an’ where we should have had ‘a’. A common problem as you are revising a post and reword something placing a word that starts with a consonant where there was a vowel before. Still, easily identified and fixed with a quick proofread before publishing. If only there was an editor to do that.

Finally, we have a sentence that I’m not really sure what it is supposed to be, but I am fairly certain that this is not what Rene was thinking he was communicating as he typed it.

Transporter Week 1

Last week, I received my  Transporter. You can read the unboxing and my thoughts after 1 day. After a week of use, I thought I’d update my impression of the device.

The biggest thing I’ve seen people talk about is how this is a Dropbox replacement.  And it is not bad as a Dropbox replacement.  Except, Dropbox is integrated into so many things. 1Password, FileThisFetch, etc. Transporter, not so much … yet.  Who knows what the future will bring.

Forget the Hopper, I have the Destroyer

with the Hopper from Dish Network.

Specifically, they are not happy that the service allows users to easily skip commercials.  I got a Replay TV (Actually, a Panasonic Showstopper PVR) in 2000 that I used until they pulled the “lifetime” channel guide a few years ago. I paid a fortune for that, we need to work on the definition of “lifetime” I guess. The Replay TV had a button on the remote that would jump forward 30 seconds.  Of course, Replay TV kind of flew under the RADAR, but it was a very handy feature when commercials came on.
